We Welcome a New Chaplain | Fr. John Baptist Hoang, OP
“My soul magnifies the Lord.
And my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.”
5 June 2018
Last week we celebrated the Feast of the Visitation. Mary travels to see Elizabeth, and bears of the Word made flesh in her womb. As Mary visits her cousin who is expecting John the Baptist, the Old and the New Testaments meet, and the promised advent of salvation is revealed. In praise and exultation, Mary recounts the wonders the Lord has done for her people, and in her own life. Her Magnificat becomes the hymn of the whole Church, as she still bears witness to the living Christ in the world today.
It is in this spirit of gratitude and joy that I write to let you know that Fr. John Baptist Hoang, O.P., will be the new Chaplain for the Catholic Center at NYU, and that I will go on to a new assignment as Editor of Magnificat on July 1st. Please join me in welcoming Fr. John Baptist Hoang!
It has been a great blessing of my priesthood to serve you all, students and friends of the Catholic Center, in these past four years. As I assume responsibilities at Magnificat, I have a new opportunity make the Gospel known through the Church’s liturgical prayer. In these happy years here at NYU, I have had the joy to hear confessions and celebrate Mass each day, and to preach the Word that gives us life at the altar. I give thanks to God for the many graces of this time with you all, as I ask your prayers in this transition and assure you of mine.
May we go to the ends of the earth, proclaiming Jesus, the Truth, in word and deed.
God bless each of you!
Born in California and raised in Virginia, Fr. John Baptist met the Dominican Friars at the University of Virginia, and he joined the Order of Preachers in 2009 after graduating from UVA. He was ordained to the priesthood in May 2016, and comes to the Catholic Center after two years as Parochial Vicar at St. Joseph’s Church in the West Village.
Fr. John Baptist will succeed Fr. Sebastian White, O.P., on July 1st. Fr. Pier Giorgio Dengler, O.P., newly ordained in Washington this May, is assigned as the new Parochial Vicar at St. Joseph’s.
